We are excited to begin New Canaan Dance Academy’s 16th year in 2015-2017! The Academy opened in September 2001 as the New Canaan Academy of Tap, but morphed in the following two years into NCDA as more dance styles were added to the program. We are now running over 100 classes a week, covering the major dance styles such as Ballet, Pre-Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Hip-Hop and Lyrical, in addition to Breakdancing, and Mom & Me Tiny Tots (for 18 – 36 months old)! Our Adult program continues this year with Tap, Ballet, Zumba, and Dance Fit.
We will be adding a 4th studio this year which will not only allow us to run more classes, but the much larger space at 32 Forest Street of 1,700 sq. ft. dedicated to a single studio will allow our students further grow in their exporation of dance styles, technique, and performance qualities.
We will continue to run classes at our 15 Forest Street location.
Our Performance Company finished a strong year in 2015-2016 with a very balanced and full agenda of regional dance festivals, workshops, and competitions. One of the most popular events attended continues to be JUMP, during which our Company dancers have the opportunity to take Master classes from and perform an NCDA-original piece in front of A-List celebrity choreographers from TV shows such as So You Think You Can Dance such as Brian Friedman and Wade Robson.
We were also invited to perform at Madison Square Garden for pre-game performance at the NBA game between the New York Knicks and the Chicago Bulls!
Our Community Outreach activities will again be spearheaded by our Special Needs program, which offers dance classes in an inclusionary environment. We will also continue to actively seek out charitable events in which our dancers can contribute through performances and dance education for our local community.
I look forward to another year of watching all our students grow, not just as dancers, but as members of our NCDA family. I want to encourage young people (and those young at heart!) to achieve their personal best. Our students will not only learn the fundamentals of different dance disciplines, develop co-ordination and rhythmical skills, and ultimately form their own styles with confidence, but will do so in a supportive, team environment. With this strong foundation of basics, students will be able to transition into their own individual form of improvisation at the advanced level.
And, most importantly, have fun while doing it!
